Use of water bags for derrick load testing provides an economical and safe method for validating the load capabilities of the derrick. Water bags can be moved into tight areas where solid weights will not fit or could not be moved into position. With water bags, the test load can be slowly applied using the rig's own drawworks, allowing for technical issues with the derrick and its hoisting and braking power to be identified and corrected before the full test load is reached. In addition, the water bags can be drained without having to lower the test weight if the hoisting system or brakes are compromised during testing.
