Load Testing New Cranes
Newly installed cranes in manufacturing plants are required to be inspected, function tested, and proof load tested before being placed into service. This requirement is detailed in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.170. Function testing the crane at its proof load ensures that all operation features are working, most importantly the hoisting and braking functions.
Load Testing Repaired or Upgraded Cranes: Frequently cranes undergo heavy repairs or upgrades to the hoisting, braking, load carrying or control electronics. In these instances, the crane must be retested following the inspection criteria for newly installed cranes.
